Merit Award Winner. Tasman National Art Awards 2024
Judges Comments for Beach Fun
“Using extensive and almost abstract negative space, the artist has used expert mark-making in a competent interplay between cool and warm tones to invite the viewer into an anonymous and yet familiar reality, where we feel compelled to join the beachgoers and become one with the artwork”

New Zealand contemporary fine art. Capturing the love of colour, light and landscape in vivid oils.
Nicholas paints from his artist studio in Hawke’s Bay. He is inspired by the traditional impressionist artists of the past, whilst putting his own individual expressive stamp on the subjects that often go unnoticed.
His oil paintings remind the viewer of a place in time, special moments and happy experiences. Colour, texture and the interplay of light, feature in Nicholas work. Whilst painting accurately, the whole story of the composition is often not told, leaving the viewer to their own interpretation, rediscovering passages in paint, broken edges and effects of fleeting light over time.
Artist Statement:
“It is my intention to paint the subject as painterly as possible, whilst still retaining the structure and form of the scene. When I’m painting out in the fresh air and set up my easel, I’m drawn firstly to the colours of nature, followed closely by the interplay of light and shade that falls on the composition. A familiar scene provides endless opportunities depending on time of day and season.”
